For Nylas alternatives, start with Aurinko for unified mailbox data, Unipile for email/calendar connections alongside messaging, or Cronofy for calendar and scheduling infrastructure. EmailEngine suits teams that want self-hosted email middleware. Direct Google Workspace APIs and Microsoft Graph are narrower options when your customers use one provider ecosystem and your engineers can own the integration. This comparison focuses on connected email/calendar workflows. Nylas now also bundles Notetaker and hosted Agent Accounts, so replacing one API does not replace every product. Compare account allowances, transfers, hosting, OAuth work and operational support before choosing.

Decide which part of Nylas you are replacing

Reading a customer's existing mailbox, booking an appointment and giving an AI agent a new hosted inbox are different requirements. A platform covering one does not automatically cover all three. Define which objects your application uses: messages, folders/labels, contacts, calendars, recurring events, availability, webhooks, scheduler components or recordings.

The current Nylas pricing page bundles Connect email/calendar, Notetaker and Agent Accounts. Free includes five connected email/calendar accounts and limited usage of the other products. Essentials is US$15 per month with 10 combined connected accounts and 10 calendar-only accounts. Pro is US$49 monthly or $43 per month with annual commitment, with 25 combined connected accounts and 35 calendar-only accounts. Overage, support and certain authentication/branding entitlements depend on the plan.

Those are reasons to reassess old comparisons. A free proof of concept is currently available, and a calendar-only account has a different allowance from a combined email/calendar connection. Hosted Agent Accounts have their own mail/storage/bandwidth units. Do not compare an older per-account Nylas quote with a new rival minimum without matching the actual products and usage.

Keep Nylas if its current connected-provider abstraction, authentication and supported components fit your application and the complete bill is acceptable. A working integration is more than endpoint names: it contains identifiers, recovery logic, historical data and customer authorization. Consider alternatives for a clear change such as self-hosted processing, a scheduling-specific platform or a direct single-provider integration.

Six options with different scopes

Official product, pricing and developer sources were checked on October 14, 2026. This is a research comparison, not a performed API migration or reliability benchmark. Proposed tests below describe how to evaluate a fit; no measured latency, uptime or engineering savings are claimed.

Alternative Useful scope Current cost context Main qualification
Aurinko Unified email, calendar, contacts and tasks Unified API from $1/account/month with transfer tiers BrightSync logic is separately scoped
Unipile Connected email/calendar plus other communications €49/month minimum for up to 10 accounts; tiers above Provider limits remain; scheduler features marked coming soon
Cronofy Calendar sync, availability and scheduling OEM Emerging $819/month billed annually Email mailbox API is a separate need
EmailEngine Self-hosted mailbox read/send/sync $1,450 or €1,200/year, excluding VAT Hosting, Redis and operations are yours; not a full calendar API
Google Workspace APIs Direct Gmail and Google Calendar integrations Project quotas/billing and provider costs to evaluate Google ecosystem, OAuth and integration operations
Microsoft Graph Direct Microsoft mail/calendar integration Service licences, applicable API terms and operations Microsoft ecosystem, consent and throttling

Currencies and commitments are retained from their sources. “Unlimited API calls” does not cancel the underlying provider's limits, and a paid middleware licence does not buy every user's mailbox subscription.

Aurinko for unified mailbox data and optional sync logic

Aurinko provides email, calendar, contact and task APIs, plus optional prebuilt synchronization logic. Its developer overview describes a unified changes/deltas model and webhooks across supported providers, with authorization and notification-subscription maintenance handled by the platform. It identifies the unified API as mainly pass-through, with limited control data cached.

Shortlist it if the core requirement is mailbox data inside a CRM, ATS or similar application. A proposed evaluation could read a contact's email history, receive a changed-event notification and reconcile the updated record. The advantage to investigate is the fit of the unified delta model and optional sync logic, rather than an unsupported promise that every integration will take less time.

The pricing page lists Unified API from $1 per account per month for a transfer tier below 1 GB, $1.50 below 5 GB and $2 for unlimited transfers. It says to pay for the APIs you use, so confirm the exact charge for your combination of email/calendar/contact/task scope. BrightSync starts at $2 per user monthly for calendar/contact/task-only sync, $3 for email-only and $4 for more than one sync. These are different commercial layers.

The tradeoff is translating your application to its models. An existing Nylas identifier or webhook payload is not automatically an Aurinko identifier or notification. Test recurring events, folder changes and deletion handling with your actual provider mix before assuming equivalent behaviour.

Skip Aurinko as a full replacement if your essential requirement is Nylas-hosted Agent Accounts or a specific meeting-recording product not established in this scope. Also distinguish the unified API from BrightSync's prebuilt logic: buying one does not prove your complete CRM synchronization policy is implemented.

Unipile for email/calendar alongside other communications

Unipile's email offering describes Gmail, Outlook and IMAP through a unified API with sending, retrieval, folders and webhooks. Its current pricing/capability page also lists Google and Outlook calendar endpoints alongside communication integrations. It should not be dismissed as a messaging-only product.

Evaluate it when your application needs connected email/calendar and another supported communication channel in the same integration layer. A proposed CRM workflow could attach email context and a calendar event to a customer record. Demonstrate the exact endpoint and provider authentication method rather than assume every advertised channel shares the same authorization or operating rules.

Pricing has a €49 monthly minimum including up to 10 connected accounts. The reviewed 11-to-50 tier is €5 per account per month, with larger tiers presented separately. It says Gmail/Outlook email and calendar count as one billed account, while separate linked channel accounts count individually. The page advertises no extra request/message usage fee, but provider limits still apply. A seven-day trial is separate from a free permanent production plan.

The potential gain is matching connected communication scope to one API and an account-based bill. The limitation is feature completeness. The calendar inventory marks scheduler and calendar webhook functions as coming soon; an event endpoint alone is not proof of a complete Nylas Scheduler replacement. Confirm current availability before relying on those functions.

Skip Unipile if your mandatory scheduling component or event-notification workflow is not available in the proposed scope. Also avoid assuming that a linked-account price includes provider subscriptions, every channel's external costs or the hosted agent-inbox product in Nylas's bundle.

Cronofy for calendar and scheduling infrastructure

Cronofy's developer offering centres on calendar connectivity, availability, scheduling, conferencing and meeting transcription. It is relevant when the main requirement is booking meetings inside a product rather than reading and sending users' email.

Shortlist it for multi-person availability, managed scheduling or enterprise calendar connections. A useful proposed scenario includes two participants in different time zones, a reschedule and a recurring calendar event that blocks availability. Ask how the platform sees the change and which owner receives the notification. A demonstration should use the proposed package rather than an unrestricted enterprise sandbox.

The OEM pricing page shows Emerging at US$819 per month billed annually, including up to 500 synced accounts, 2,000 Smart Invites and 500 Application Calendars. Growth is $2,399 monthly on annual billing with larger allowances and Enterprise Connect access. Extra accounts, invites and application calendars have separate rates. Cronofy's Direct licence for your own organisation is a different offer from OEM infrastructure embedded in your product.

Cronofy now also offers Meeting Agents with separate usage pricing, which may address part of a recording/transcription requirement. Obtain that specific scope if you use Nylas Notetaker; the calendar subscription does not by itself establish a like-for-like recording replacement.

The advantage to investigate is a scheduling-focused operating layer. The tradeoff is minimum package size and scope. Skip it as the sole replacement if your application still needs a connected email API. A substantial scheduling package can be appropriate for a larger product while being disproportionate to a proof of concept with a few calendar users.

EmailEngine for self-hosted email middleware

EmailEngine is a self-hosted REST API for Gmail, Microsoft 365 and IMAP mailboxes. Its current offering describes reading, sending and syncing email, OAuth handling, parsed inbound events and webhook delivery. Calendar invites parsed from email are not the same thing as a general calendar/availability API.

Choose it for evaluation when controlling where the middleware runs is a material requirement and your team can operate it. A proposed support integration could receive an email event, retrieve an attachment and send a threaded reply through the user's account. Verify the account type and delegated/shared-mailbox requirements you actually use.

The same official page lists US$1,450 or €1,200 per year, excluding VAT where applicable. One annual subscription covers unlimited connected mailboxes and instances managed by the company, with updates while active. The trial is 14 days on your own server. Enterprise procurement/perpetual arrangements are discussed separately. These are current terms, rather than an old remembered annual price.

The potential benefit over a hosted unified API is control of middleware deployment and a flat licence model. The tradeoff is infrastructure and operational work: EmailEngine requires its own runtime and Redis database, with capacity, monitoring, backups and network access managed by your team. Unlimited licensed mailboxes do not imply unlimited physical capacity or provider request quotas.

Skip it if you want a fully managed service or need one product to replace all Nylas calendar, scheduling and Notetaker functions. Budget those separately. Self-hosting changes who operates the system; it does not automatically establish compliance or eliminate the need to protect mailbox credentials and content.

Direct Google Workspace APIs for a Google-focused application

The Gmail API provides authorized mailbox access, sending, drafts, labels and notifications. The Google Calendar API exposes calendars, events, recurring events and access-control resources. Together they are a direct alternative for the Google portion of a Nylas integration.

Evaluate this route when your intended users are in the Google ecosystem and engineering control is more valuable than a provider-neutral interface. The potential gain is access to native objects and behaviour without translating through a middleware model. The cost is maintaining your own authentication, synchronization and recovery logic, plus a separate solution when Microsoft or another provider is required.

Do not call these universally free or unlimited. Gmail's current usage documentation describes updated limits for projects created on or after May 1, 2026, retained earlier quotas for certain existing projects and a daily billing threshold. It says Google will share full billing details later in 2026 with notice. Check your project's applicable quota/billing model rather than reuse older limits or calculate an unpublished tariff.

The scope documentation distinguishes sensitive/restricted access and explains OAuth consent and verification requirements. Choose the actual permissions needed by the product and establish the applicable review requirements before estimating launch effort. A small development test is not proof that a public application is ready for all users.

Skip the direct Google route as a complete replacement when multiple provider ecosystems are essential and the team cannot maintain separate adapters. It is also not a direct replacement for Nylas-hosted agent mailboxes or its meeting bot. Compare implementation and operating effort alongside any middleware fees saved.

Microsoft Graph for a Microsoft-focused application

Microsoft Graph exposes Microsoft cloud data, including Outlook/Exchange mail, calendars and contacts. It can replace the Microsoft side of a unified integration when your application is deliberately built around that ecosystem.

Shortlist it when most required accounts are Microsoft 365/Outlook and the product needs native capabilities. A proposed evaluation should include your actual tenant policy, delegated access or application access, and any shared mailbox requirement. These are different authorization scenarios; success with one personal test account does not prove an enterprise rollout will behave the same way.

Microsoft's authentication guidance explains application registration, credentials and the distinction between delegated and application access. Build the permission and administrator-consent requirements into the integration plan. Do not assume authorization created for Nylas can simply be moved to a new application.

The cost context is Microsoft service licensing, applicable API/billing terms and your operating infrastructure. No universal paid API tariff or blanket free-all-Graph promise was verified for this comparison. Specify the endpoints and underlying licences you need, and include engineering, monitoring and support in the buying decision.

Graph's throttling guidance describes HTTP 429 responses and Retry-After handling. That is a concrete operating dependency: a direct integration needs a recovery policy, rather than immediate repeated requests. Test delayed updates and expired/disconnected access alongside normal message/event operations.

The advantage is native Microsoft scope; the limitation is maintaining that scope and a separate adapter for non-Microsoft accounts. Skip it as the entire replacement if Google, IMAP and a prebuilt scheduler must all work through one consistent interface without the team building those layers.

Plan an API migration around identity and recovery

First separate provider data from the middleware's representations. Inventory your Nylas connected accounts, internal user mapping, message/event identifiers, stored webhook payloads, synchronization cursors, scheduler configurations and historical records. Identify every place the application persists a vendor-specific ID.

Obtain an authorization and reconnect plan from the destination. Customer mailbox data may remain at the provider while the application's new connection needs different consent, credentials or identifiers. Do not assume refresh tokens, grant IDs or enterprise approval can be transferred. Keep a clear mapping rather than overwrite one account identifier with another.

Use a proposed evaluation covering a new message, folder/label change, deleted event, recurring-event exception, daylight-saving boundary and a temporarily disconnected account. Then replay a duplicated or delayed notification. Check that the application's resulting state is correct and that a user can understand how to reconnect.

For scheduling, test availability separately from event creation. A successful created event does not establish conflict detection, working hours, resource booking, conferencing or a customer-facing scheduler component. For email, confirm reply threading, attachments, sent-folder behaviour and the provider permissions required by the actual use case.

Compare complete costs with the same workload: active connected accounts by type, data transfer, calls, AI/recording use, hosting, support and migration work. Keep overlapping collection long enough to reconcile data, with an explicit plan to avoid duplicate sends or bookings. Only retire the old connection after the new path and necessary historical access have been verified.

Frequently asked questions

Which alternatives are closest for unified email and calendar?

Aurinko and Unipile are useful initial candidates for connected mailbox/calendar APIs. Check exact providers, webhooks, recurring-event behaviour and scheduling features. Neither is assumed to replace every current Nylas-bundled product automatically.

Does Nylas currently have a free plan?

Its current page describes a permanent Free plan with five combined connected accounts and limited Notetaker/Agent Account usage. It supports a proof of concept, rather than unlimited production volume. Match the actual usage allowances before deciding to switch solely on entry price.

Is Cronofy an email API replacement?

Its verified scope here is calendar/scheduling and separately offered meeting capture. If your app reads or sends connected mailbox email, that requirement needs another component. OEM and Direct organisation licensing are also different offers.

Is EmailEngine a free open-source substitute?

The reviewed offering is paid self-hosted software with a 14-day trial, an annual licence and enterprise options. It is not described as a free perpetual production plan. Infrastructure and operations are additional responsibilities.

Are direct Google and Microsoft APIs always cheaper?

No like-for-like total was established. Provider quotas/billing, licences, authorization work, implementation and maintenance matter. Google's current Gmail documentation includes updated quotas and a billing threshold, so an old blanket-free claim is not a sound budget.

Can connected account credentials and IDs move unchanged?

Do not assume so. Agree a reconnect/consent plan and map vendor identifiers to your own users and provider objects. Validate historical access, synchronization state and notifications before disabling the existing integration.

Choose the abstraction your product can maintain

Use Aurinko/Unipile for a unified connected-data evaluation, Cronofy for a scheduling-focused scope, EmailEngine for operated email middleware or native APIs for a deliberate single-provider build. Keep Nylas when its current bundle and working integration make sense. Demonstrate identity mapping, recovery and a realistic cost model before committing to a migration.
