Total volunteer value = number of volunteers × average hours per volunteer × value per hour. If you already have total hours from a timekeeping system, set the volunteer count to 1 and enter the total hours directly.
Which hourly value should you use?
Use the benchmark required by your report, donor or jurisdiction. For U.S. context, Independent Sector and the Do Good Institute announced in April 2026 that the estimated national value of a volunteer hour for 2025 was $36.14. Independent Sector volunteer value. State or role-specific values can differ.
Economic value is not the same as accounting recognition
A volunteer-service estimate can communicate community contribution, but financial reporting and grant-match rules may recognize donated services differently. Follow the applicable accounting standard or award conditions.
Improve accuracy with actual time records
Whenever possible, use recorded volunteer hours rather than a rough average. Segmenting skilled professional services from general volunteer activity may also be necessary under some reporting rules.
Use volunteer value consistently in reports and match documentation
An economic value per volunteer hour can help describe donated capacity, but it should not be presented as cash revenue or automatic grant match. Some funders require role-specific prevailing rates or prohibit certain in-kind valuations. Keep timesheets or equivalent records for contributed hours and document why the selected hourly value is appropriate. If you use the Independent Sector national estimate, label the reference year and distinguish it from staff payroll cost.
