Drift Review: Features, Limits and Sunset

Last updated

Drift was built to turn website visits into conversations that sales teams could act on. It combined a chat widget with playbooks, lead qualification, routing, meeting booking and account context. That made it useful for B2B teams that wanted to talk to a high-intent visitor instead of asking the visitor to complete a form and wait for a follow-up.

Short verdict: Drift may remain useful to existing customers during their allowed access period, but it is not a sensible new long-term purchase. Clari + Salesloft is retiring it on January 31, 2027, or at the end of your contract if that comes first. Choose a replacement based on the job you need to preserve, and export the data you need before access ends.

What Drift did

Drift used chat playbooks to show different experiences based on the page, visitor, campaign or account. The official Chat Playbooks guide, checked October 30, 2026, describes options such as Engage All, Pricing Page, Skip the Form, Visitor Retargeting, Blog, Welcome Message, Email Capture, Target Accounts and Paid Ad Converter. The idea was to engage a visitor in context and guide the conversation toward an answer or a meeting.

It also offered live chat, meeting booking, routing and links to sales systems. For teams using Salesforce, the official Drift and Salesforce guide, checked October 30, 2026, describes how Drift conversations can relate to lead, contact and campaign records. The exact workflow depends on account settings and integrations, so buyers should not assume every feature was available in every plan.

Key features to understand

Drift's documented feature set was broader than a chat launcher. The official help center pages checked October 30, 2026 describe these functions:

Where Drift was strong for existing customers

Contextual conversations

A chat prompt can be more useful than a generic form when it responds to the page or campaign that brought a visitor to the site. Drift's playbook model supported that kind of targeting. The value depends on the quality of the questions and the conditions that trigger each playbook. Too many overlapping bots can confuse visitors and make results difficult to interpret.

Routing and meeting handoff

For a sales team, collecting a lead is only the first step. The next step is routing the conversation to the right person and making it easy to book a meeting. Existing users should inventory their routing rules, online status, business hours, calendars and CRM assignments. These settings are part of the migration scope, not just widget design.

Reporting tied to revenue

Drift's official Salesforce revenue reporting guide, checked October 30, 2026, documents Pipeline and Closed Won reports and CSV export. If your team uses those reports for attribution, preserve the definitions, filters and sample exports before switching. A replacement may report engagement differently, so do not compare the totals as if they were automatically equivalent.

Limits and the sunset risk

The most important current limitation is not a missing chat feature. It is the retirement schedule. Clari + Salesloft announced the gradual sunset in March 2026 and named 1mind as the AI successor for Drift chatbot functionality. Salesloft's current Chat Agents page, checked October 30, 2026, says it has transitioned from Drift to 1mind.

The official sunset FAQ, checked October 30, 2026, says Drift will be retired on January 31, 2027. Your access ends on that date or when the current contract ends, whichever comes first. The website chat widget, Drift Email and custom integrations built on the Drift API stop after the retirement date. If your contract extends beyond January 31, data remains offline through April 30, 2027 for export requests; remaining data is scheduled for permanent deletion on May 1, 2027.

The separate official restoration guide, checked October 30, 2026, says Drift became accessible again but some functions remain limited. Playbooks and the widget are initially turned off, integrations are being restored in phases, Drift Email is not live, and some report exports remain unavailable. Confirm the current state of your account before relying on an old workflow or assuming every feature is restored.

Another limit is price visibility. Salesloft does not publish a current Drift price on its current Chat Agents page. Existing customers should use their signed agreement, not a third-party article with an old price. New buyers should compare current alternatives and get a written quote before planning the migration budget.

Pros and cons

Pros for existing users

  • Playbooks could tailor conversations to the page, visitor or target account.
  • Routing and meeting booking linked chat to a clear next sales action.
  • Documented Salesforce reporting could connect selected conversations to pipeline and closed-won views.

Cons and risks

  • The product is scheduled for retirement, so long-term investment needs a migration plan.
  • No current public Drift price is shown by Salesloft, making third-party historical figures unsafe as a current quote.
  • Data export deadlines and custom API dependencies need direct confirmation.
  • Do not assume a successor will import every playbook, report or record automatically.

Pricing and contract questions

No current public Drift list price was found on the official Salesloft page checked October 30, 2026. The page now describes the transition to 1mind rather than a new Drift purchase. Existing customers should ask their account manager to confirm billing, renewal restrictions and the service level that remains available until access ends. The official FAQ says contracts ending before January 31, 2027 are honored with no billing changes; contracts extending beyond that date are handled case by case.

For a replacement, compare the total cost for the workflow you need. Include paid seats, AI outcomes or conversations, website traffic limits, routing and calendar features, CRM access, onboarding, support, contract length and any period when both systems must be available. The Drift pricing guide explains what is currently verifiable, while the alternatives guide links to current official pricing pages.

Data export and migration

Ask Salesloft for the export procedure and the deadline that applies to your account. The official sunset FAQ directs customers to their Account Manager or Support for export requests and links to the official Drift Export Drift Data guide. Do not assume that a CSV from one revenue report is a complete archive of contacts, conversations, transcripts, attachments, playbooks, routing rules, reports and custom integrations.

  1. Confirm your contract end date and data-access deadline in writing.
  2. Request a list of exportable data types and supported formats.
  3. Export the reports and records you need while you still have access.
  4. Check record counts, timestamps, attachments and a sample of older conversations.
  5. List every active playbook, routing rule, calendar link, CRM mapping, Drift Email flow and custom API call.
  6. Rebuild the highest-value paths in the replacement and test qualification, ownership, meeting booking and human handoff.
  7. Remove or replace the Drift widget and integrations before your applicable deadline.

Salesloft names 1mind for Drift chatbot functionality and allGood for Drift Email in the sunset FAQ. These recommendations do not mean that every workflow or record moves automatically. Get the migration scope in writing and keep a separate backup of the data your business must retain.

Who should consider Drift, and who should move now?

Existing customers who can keep it temporarily

If your contract is still active and the workflow is stable, it may be reasonable to keep the current widget running while a replacement is configured. Use that time to document what the team actually uses, export data and test the replacement. Do not treat the temporary window as a reason to delay the project until the last week.

New buyers and teams with a long rollout

A new buyer should not build a long-term roadmap around a product that is scheduled for retirement. A team with complex CRM, account targeting or custom API dependencies should start early because these workflows need more than a visual copy of the old widget.

Teams that only need a basic chat inbox

If Drift was mostly a live chat button and a shared inbox, an enterprise AI sales agent may be more than you need. Compare HubSpot, Tidio, Crisp and support-oriented tools. If the core job was form routing and meeting scheduling, evaluate Chili Piper. If the core job was Salesforce-led inbound sales, compare Qualified and 1mind.

How to evaluate the replacement

  1. Choose five real visitor scenarios, including a pricing question, a demo request, a target account, an unknown question and an offline handoff.
  2. Confirm the replacement can use the required CRM fields and route to the correct owner.
  3. Test calendar availability and confirm that a meeting is only reported as booked after a successful booking.
  4. Check how the new tool logs conversations, updates contacts and supports reporting.
  5. Review its public price or quote, usage meter, included seats and contract terms.
  6. Ask how the provider supports migration and which records it can import.
  7. Set a cutover date earlier than the applicable Drift deadline and keep a rollback plan.
