Is personal Gmail free?
Yes. A standard personal Gmail account does not have a separate monthly subscription fee. Its main cost limit is storage: a personal Google Account has up to 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and Google says WhatsApp backups can also use this space. The limit and its effects were checked on November 1, 2026 in Google's storage guide.
When the shared account reaches its quota, you may be unable to send or receive Gmail messages. A large Drive folder or photo library can use space that you expected to be available for email. Review storage use before buying a plan or moving mail.

What costs extra?
More personal storage is purchased through Google One. A business domain also has a registration and renewal cost that is separate from the Workspace licence. Some organizations buy add-ons, third-party migration help, archive tools or additional security services. Do not assume those costs are included in the monthly price shown for a Workspace user.
Google's billing guidance explains the difference between its flexible plan and annual or fixed-term plan. The annual commitment has a lower monthly rate, but the organization commits to a set number of licences for the term. Flexible billing costs more per user but gives more room to change the number of users. Check the current terms before removing a licence. Billing details, checked on November 1, 2026.
Which Gmail option fits you?
Choose personal Gmail if you only need an individual inbox
The free account is enough for routine personal mail if your shared Google storage remains below its limit. Keep the recovery email and phone current, use two-step verification, and review the storage breakdown before upgrading. If you need only more room for messages and files, compare Google One before changing providers.
Choose Workspace if you need a business domain
Workspace is the more direct fit when employees need addresses at your company domain, account administration and shared tools. Estimate the number of paid users, pooled storage, meeting features, retention needs and domain renewal cost. The lowest licence price is not always the lowest total cost if you need extra products or migration support.
Compare alternatives if privacy, storage or provider independence matters more
Google Workspace is not the only route to a custom domain. Zoho Mail and Fastmail focus on email hosting, while Proton Mail and Tuta Mail focus on privacy features. Outlook.com can be a good consumer choice for people who use Microsoft services. See the Gmail alternatives guide for the trade-offs and migration limits.
Ways to avoid unnecessary cost
- Check which Google service uses storage before paying for more. Remove unneeded large attachments, Drive files and photos only after you confirm you no longer need them.
- Compare annual and flexible Workspace billing with your expected user count. Annual billing has a commitment, so do not buy licences for users who may leave soon without checking the terms.
- Do not buy a business suite only to get a custom email address without comparing other hosted email providers and the features you actually need.
- When changing providers, include domain renewal, migration work, storage, user seats and any paid aliases in the cost estimate.
Important pricing and account-support note
Google's Help Center says web POP and Gmailify support for third-party accounts is being removed, with existing users supported until January 2027. Gmail's third-party “Send as” feature also ends in January 2027. These changes do not add a fee to Gmail itself, but they may change the setup you need if you use Gmail to manage other providers. Read the POP/Gmailify notice and Send as notice, checked on November 1, 2026.
