What is Gmail?
Gmail is Google's email service for personal accounts and organizations that use Google Workspace. A personal Gmail address ends in @gmail.com. A business account can use a company domain through Google Workspace, which adds admin controls and shared work tools. Their prices, storage rules and controls differ. Start with the official Gmail overview, checked on November 1, 2026.
Gmail suits people who use Google Calendar, Drive, Photos, Meet and Android. Its search, labels, filters and spam controls can support both a simple personal inbox and a busy work account. It is less suitable if you want your email storage separated from your other Google files, a privacy-first provider, or a custom domain without a paid business service.

Where Gmail works well
Gmail's search operators help narrow a large inbox by sender, recipient, date, attachment, label or message status. Labels can be applied to a message in more than one way, unlike a folder-only workflow. Filters can label, archive, delete, star or forward matching new messages. These are useful for receipts, project mail, newsletters and customer requests. The official search operator guide and filter guide were checked on November 1, 2026.
The service also connects closely with Google Calendar and Drive. Eligible accounts may see AI Overviews in Gmail search. Google says personal accounts need an eligible Google AI plan or Workspace Experiments, while work and school accounts need an eligible Workspace edition; supported language, region and smart-feature settings also apply. The feature is still rolling out and may not appear in every account. Checked November 1, 2026: AI Overview requirements. Do not assume every Gmail user has the same AI tools or business controls.
Limits to understand before choosing
Personal Gmail storage is shared with other Google services. If the account reaches its quota, Google says you may be unable to send or receive email, create files in Drive or back up new photos. Deleting messages alone may not solve the problem if large files or photos use most of the space. Check the storage page before paying for more space.
Personal Gmail is not the same as business email on your own domain. If you need staff accounts, domain administration, retention settings or organization-wide controls, compare Google Workspace plans rather than treating a free Gmail account as a business mailbox.
Important third-party email changes for 2027
Google's current Help Center says Gmail is removing web support for fetching mail from third-party accounts through POP and Gmailify. New users lost access after the first quarter of 2026, while existing users can continue until January 2027. A separate Gmail Help page says the third-party “Send as” feature, such as sending from a Yahoo or Outlook address inside Gmail, ends in January 2027. These changes do not mean Gmail itself is closing. Google Workspace aliases and other Gmail addresses are not affected by the Send as change. Both notices were checked on November 1, 2026: POP and Gmailify notice and Send as notice.
If you currently use Gmail as a central inbox for several outside accounts, make a plan now. Use each provider's supported account connection in a mail app, set up forwarding where appropriate, or move to a provider with a migration tool. Test replies and new incoming messages before changing your main address.

Gmail FAQ
Is Gmail free?
Yes. A standard personal Gmail account is free and includes up to 15 GB of Google Account storage shared with Drive, Photos and other supported storage uses. The storage limit and source were checked on November 1, 2026.
Does Gmail support other email accounts?
Gmail's web POP and Gmailify support is being phased out. Existing users can continue until January 2027, but new users lost access after the first quarter of 2026. Check Google's current notice before planning a multi-account inbox.
Should a business use free Gmail?
A personal Gmail account can work for an individual, but a business that needs its own domain, central account management or organization controls should compare Google Workspace with other business email services.
