Google's generative AI performance reporting is now a core part of modern SEO measurement. The report gives site owners a way to track visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but the data is easy to misread if it is treated like normal organic clicks and rankings.
Start with the right question
Do not begin with “Did AI traffic increase?” Start with “Which pages are being shown in AI search, for which markets, and does that visibility lead to useful business outcomes?” That question produces a better analysis.
Separate four data layers
- Generative AI impressions.
- Normal organic clicks and impressions.
- Analytics engagement.
- Business conversions.
Each layer measures a different step. Keeping them separate prevents an increase in AI impressions from being reported as an automatic traffic win.
Build a page-level analysis
- Export AI visibility by page and country.
- Group pages by topic and intent.
- Compare with normal organic performance.
- Review pages gaining and losing visibility.
- Check conversions before changing the content.
What to look for in pages gaining visibility
Look for original information, clear explanations, strong topical coverage, useful examples and easy-to-extract facts. These patterns can guide content improvements, but correlation is not proof that one formatting choice caused AI visibility.
How to investigate a drop
Check the date range, country, device and Search Console anomalies first. Then check recent content, indexing and technical changes. If a major AI model or Search experience changed, annotate that event before comparing periods.
Build a monthly AI SEO report
Use a simple table with page, topic, AI impressions, organic clicks, engagement, conversions and notable changes. Add a short interpretation for each major movement instead of only showing percentages.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI impressions equal clicks?
No. An AI impression means a site link was shown in a supported AI search surface. It does not guarantee a click.
Should AI visibility replace normal SEO reporting?
No. It should be added as another measurement layer.
What is the best first segmentation?
Start with page, country, date and topic. Add query or prompt data when available.
