Choose Fiverr when the job fits a clearly priced Gig or custom offer and you want to compare ready-made services. Choose Upwork when you need proposals, hourly work, milestones or a longer client relationship. Both are freelance marketplaces, but the fee model and work process differ, so compare the buyer total and freelancer net earnings instead of choosing on headline commission alone.

Pricing: compare the whole transaction

Fiverr’s official Earnings page says sellers receive 80% of the purchase amount for completed orders, including extras and tips. For a US$100 order, the seller’s Fiverr earnings are US$80 before taxes and payout-provider charges. Buyers pay a 5.5% service fee plus US$3.50 for orders under US$200 according to the Payment Terms checked October 31, 2026. A US$100 Gig therefore has US$9 in service fees before taxes and any currency-conversion cost. Fiverr Payment Terms and Earnings page.

Upwork’s current freelancer pricing lists a standard service fee from 0% to 15% per contract. The fee is displayed before the freelancer submits a proposal or accepts an offer and remains fixed after the contract starts. The Basic freelancer account is free; Freelancer Plus is listed at US$19.99 per month and includes 100 Connects. Additional Connects cost US$0.15 each. The client pricing page lists 5% for Basic and 10% for Business Plus, and contract initiation fees may also apply. Upwork freelancer pricing and client pricing, checked October 31, 2026.

Do not compare Fiverr’s 20% seller share with Upwork’s 0% to 15% fee and stop there. A freelancer may spend Connects on proposals that do not become contracts, while a Fiverr seller may spend time answering messages and revising a package. A buyer may pay a service fee on either marketplace, and an ongoing project may have costs that are not visible in the initial quote. Calculate a realistic project total and net earnings using your expected contract value.

Features and work process

Fiverr starts from a service package

A Fiverr seller publishes a Gig with scope, price, delivery time, revisions, requirements and work samples. A buyer searches by task, applies filters and compares the offers. If the service does not fit the package, the buyer can ask a question, request a custom quote or use Request to order where that option appears. This flow can be quick when the deliverable is easy to define before purchase.

The trade-off is that a package can hide important differences if a buyer reads only the starting price. Check the included file formats, rights, revisions, quantity and extras. Sellers should write exclusions in plain language and collect requirements before work begins. The Fiverr setup guide covers the buyer and seller steps.

Upwork starts from a job or contract

Upwork lets a client post a job, review proposals and invite talent. Hourly contracts use time tracking and a weekly billing process, while fixed-price contracts can be organized around milestones. This makes it easier to discuss scope before a contract begins and to manage a project that continues after the first deliverable.

The trade-off is that the buyer may need to review many proposals, and freelancers must spend time finding suitable jobs and writing bids. Connects and paid membership can add costs. The exact fee and available features depend on the account and contract type, so read the current official pricing pages before committing.

Ease of use and discovery

Fiverr is often simpler for a buyer who already knows what service to purchase. The listing presents a defined offer, and the buyer can compare packages and examples. Upwork is more flexible when the buyer needs to describe a problem and receive tailored proposals. The extra flexibility also means more work to define the brief, review candidates and agree on milestones.

For freelancers, Fiverr asks you to make the service itself easy to understand and find. Upwork asks you to match job posts, explain why you fit and manage a proposal pipeline. Neither model guarantees a client. A polished Gig does not promise orders, and a large job feed does not promise that a proposal will win.

Integrations, collaboration and support

For a short task, the most important collaboration features may be the order brief, messages, file delivery, revision process and payment record. Fiverr organizes these around the Gig and order page. Its Resolution Center is designed for order-related requests, and the official guide says the other party has 48 hours to accept or decline a request. See the Fiverr Resolution Center guide, checked October 31, 2026.

For longer work, the contract structure can matter more than the chat interface. Upwork’s hourly and fixed-price options provide a more explicit contract path for ongoing work, including time tracking or milestones depending on the contract. Check the official support pages for payment protection, dispute rules and which terms apply to the project you plan to create. Do not assume the same cancellation or dispute policy applies across both sites.

Neither marketplace removes the need to protect confidential information. Share only the access and files required for the job, use the platform’s approved workflows, and keep permitted copies of your own deliverables and financial records.

Scope changes, ownership and risk

Fiverr and Upwork both require the buyer to understand the agreed scope, but they frame the work differently. On Fiverr, check the package description, revision count, delivery requirements and any commercial-use terms before you order. Fiverr’s Payment Terms say ownership transfers are subject to full payment, and a cancellation can affect whether the buyer may use the delivery. If a problem comes up on an active order, use the current Resolution Center process rather than assuming a refund will be automatic.

On Upwork, choose the contract type deliberately. Hourly work and fixed-price milestones have different payment and review steps. Read the current contract terms for time tracking, milestone approval, disputes and the exact work that is covered. Neither marketplace guarantees quality or removes the need to verify samples, confirm who owns source files and agree on how scope changes will be handled.

For either service, keep client information private, share only the access needed for the task, and write down what a successful delivery looks like. If the project contains sensitive data or business-critical systems, check the provider’s security and confidentiality terms before sharing files or credentials.

Which marketplace fits which job?

Choose Fiverr if

  • The deliverable can be described before work begins.
  • You want to compare packaged services and starting prices.
  • The job is short, repeatable or easy to split into a custom offer.
  • You are a freelancer who can show examples and define clear package boundaries.

Choose Upwork if

  • You need proposals for a custom brief rather than a ready-made package.
  • The project may run for weeks or months and use hourly work or milestones.
  • You are a freelancer who prefers applying to jobs and building contract relationships.
  • You need the contract type to define time tracking, milestones and payment terms.

Switching from Fiverr to Upwork

Do not assume a Gig, reviews, seller level or order history can be imported into Upwork. No official bulk transfer route for these items was confirmed in the sources checked October 31, 2026. Save your own portfolio files, case studies, service descriptions, contracts, invoices and financial reports where you are allowed to retain them. Then rewrite the service as a project proposal or portfolio example that fits Upwork’s format.

Fiverr’s Earnings page supports downloadable activity reports and PDF earnings statements. Those records help with bookkeeping, but they are not a substitute for saving deliverables and client-approved case studies. Follow each marketplace’s current Terms of Service when communicating with active clients or moving work.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for beginners?

Fiverr can suit a beginner with a clear, packageable service and strong examples. Upwork can suit someone who is comfortable writing proposals and responding to job briefs. Neither platform guarantees a first client.

Which is better for long-term contracts?

Upwork is usually the more direct fit for hourly or fixed-price contracts that continue over time. Fiverr can handle repeat work when the scope fits its order and custom-offer process.
